During this "Proper Liturgy for Maundy Thursday," we draw principally from The Book of Common Prayer and from Common Worship resources from the Church of England. We offer optional foot-washing (John 13:1-17) as we also commemorate Jesus' institution of the Lord's Supper/Holy Communion. At the end of the (evening) service, we ceremonially strip the worship space of decoration as we enter into Our Lord's betrayal and death.
At sunset today begins the Triduum, the three holy days that end at sundown on Easter Day. In each of these three days, we commemorate an aspect of the end of Our Lord's incarnate life among us: betrayal, passion and death, and resurrection.
Following the liturgy tonight, members of the congregation may participate in a part of the all-night Gethsemane Watch or Vigil of Repose as we respond to Jesus' request to "Stay with me, pray with me."
