The church is stripped of its decorative elements after the Maundy Thursday (7 pm) service, representing the emptiness of the world at the time of Christ's passion and death. The church remains bare until the Great Vigil on Easter morning. In the silence of the empty church, members of the congregation sit in watches in response to Jesus' plea to his friends to "stay with me, remain here with me." A very holy time.
